Desert Song

Track 1 | Mother Medicine (7:14)

Mother Medicine - Sara Emmitt Album Cover

The beginning of this song floated in as I drove through the desert on my way to my new home in New Mexico. With my car packed with all of my belongings, and my heart brimming with excitement, I felt a sense of coming home as I rolled past the soft, pink hills freckled with spiny cacti. The chorus came as I began to meet others on a similar healing path as mine when I settled into my desert home.

Desert Song Lyrics

written by Sara Emmitt

Oh the desert calls to say

sweet child come my way

bring your footprints to my skin

let your heart be wild again

Tobacco and white sage

we remember the way

our ancestors harvested earth’s medicine

and sang with the hymns of the wind

Oooooooooo oooooooooooooo

May we trust what we’ve been given

every burden is a blessing

every shadow is a teacher

to show where we don’t see our light

We hold the truth in our hands

we have come to heal this land

We hold the truth in our hands

we have come to heal this land

So we sing with the wind

we howl at the moon

we dance with grandfather fire

until the earth, she beckons us to retire

To you, I belong

to your mountains, your desert songs

to your waters, from which I came

and to your flesh, I will return again

Oooooooo oooooooooo

May we trust what we’ve been given

every burden is a blessing

every shadow is a teacher

to show where we don’t see our light

We hold the truth in our hands

we have come to heal this land

We hold the truth in our hands

we have come to heal this land

So in the desert, just before the dawn

in this great darkness

we remember our soul’s song

And just like a whisper

coming through the night

we begin to awaken to our light

Yes we trust what we’ve been given

in this time that we are living

we are the dreamers, we have a vision

we are the medicine men and women

We hold the truth in our hands

we have some to heal this land (x4)

We have come to heal this land (x3)

We have to heal (x3)
