Music IS THY MEDICINE

I came to music when I was in the grips of a life-threatening illness. In 2011, a scan revealed cancer in my lymphatic system, and a group of tumors were found growing at the base of my neck. I spent years traveling all over the world in search of a cure for this ominous dis-ease, and finally, I found myself in the quiet nest of my mother’s home in Portland, OR. It was here in 2014, on the edge of my waning life, that I wrote my first song.

Not too long after the birth of this song, another scan revealed that the tumors that had draped themselves around the narrow passage of my neck had dissolved, offering me a new lease on life, and a new path of purpose. I did not doubt that my breakthrough in singing had helped save my life. Music became my work, my prayer, my companion, my religion, and my medicine.

While I have had the privilege of going through a beautiful and miraculous healing experience, I believe that healing work is something we do until the day we die. So for that, I play music as a practice for embodiment and alignment. I continue to write music as a form of preventative medicine for my health, and a way of nourishing and connecting to my soul on a daily basis.

Today, I offer my home-grown medicine songs to sacred containers of groups and individuals, giving participants an opportunity to tap into the deeper parts of themselves that seek healing and allow the music to fill and soothe those spaces, just as I did for myself when I brought my own body back to life. This healing modality has proven to be a profound experience for participants, offering insight, regeneration, and a loving salve to each life it touches. I find it absolutely beautiful that the very music that healed me from the depths of unwellness now lends its medicine to many others. I believe this is the incredible gift that stepping into our purpose can offer the world.

I have released two full-length albums. My first album was released with my sister, Samantha Emmitt, under The Emmitt Sisters - Moon Over Mountains and my second album was my debut solo album - Mother Medicine.
